Welcome to this interview with Henrik Facile, the driving force behind KRONAN Spirits and one of the key enthousiasts bringing Batavia Arrack and Swedish Punsch back into the global spotlight. His journey began with a deep fascination for these historic spirits and evolved into a mission to restore their quality, identity, and international relevance. Today, KRONAN Spirits stands at the intersection of heritage and innovation, reintroducing a forgotten tradition to a new generation of Rum and cocktail lovers. Now, we dive into Henrik’s story: from the first spark of inspiration to what lies ahead for KRONAN in the coming years.

1. For readers meeting you for the first time, could you introduce yourself and share how your fascination with Batavia Arrack and Swedish Punsch began — and how that journey ultimately led to the start of KRONAN Spirits?

My name is Henrik Facile, and I have spent much of my professional life working with premium wine and spirits, always inspired by quality, originality, and the story behind what is in the glass. My fascination with Swedish Punsch began when I realized that this was not just a tradition, but a unique Swedish spirits concept with roots going back to 1733. I was genuinely surprised that a category with such history, character, and cultural significance had, in many ways, seen so little true development since 1917. When I launched Facile Punsch in 1993, my ambition was to help bring Swedish Punsch back to life as a true international premium liqueur, both in quality and in presentation. Today, I take real pride in representing Swedish Punsch as an EU GI-classified product, with all the identity and responsibility that comes with that recognition under the wine and spirits framework. The more I worked with the category, the clearer it became that Batavia Arrack was the historic and qualitative foundation of it all. KRONAN and its products became the natural continuation of that mission — to protect not just a tradition, but a unique concept, raise the quality, and secure its place in the modern international premium market.

2. You often talk about “spreading the news” of Batavia Arrack and Swedish Punsch. How do you feel these spirits are perceived today, and why do you believe now is the right moment to bring them back into the spotlight?

I believe both Batavia Arrack and Swedish Punsch have been overlooked and misunderstood for far too long. What many forget is that Swedish Punsch already had an important place in classic cocktail culture from the early 1900s and appears in many of the most respected cocktail books, including The Savoy Cocktail Book. Swedish Punsch is also, quite simply, a rum liqueur, and that helps explain its natural place in the wider spirits world. For the past 14 years, KRONAN Swedish Punsch has helped reintroduce this classic category to the U.S. and European markets, where the cocktail community has embraced its quality and mixability. So far it has been on a smaller scale, but the response has been sincere, enthusiastic, and very encouraging. Together with our recently launched KRONAN Batavia Arrack, I truly believe KRONAN Spirits both products will find many more friends around the world. The market today is finally ready again for spirits with authenticity, heritage, and soul.

3. Swedish Punsch has deep roots in Scandinavian culture, while Batavia Arrack traces back to Indonesia. How do these two worlds come together in your work at KRONAN Spirits?

That meeting between Indonesia and Sweden is, to me, one of the most fascinating parts of the entire story. Batavia Arrack from Java became the historic base of Swedish Punsch, and in Sweden it evolved into something entirely unique — a category shaped by trade, craftsmanship, taste, and imagination. At the same time, Batavia Arrack from Java is also part of the broader rum and cane-spirit world, which gives it an even wider relevance and beauty. At KRONAN, we work with deep respect for that foundation, while also using selected rums with character from the West Indies to build greater depth, balance, and complexity in our expressions. So this is not only a Scandinavian story, nor only an Indonesian one — it is a story of connection. That is why I often say Swedish Punsch is not just a product, but a concept. It is this meeting of worlds that gives it such lasting identity and such exciting possibilities for the future.

4. As interest in premium and historically rich spirits grows, where do you see the biggest opportunities for Batavia Arrack and Swedish Punsch in the modern market?

The greatest opportunities are clearly in the premium cocktail world, where bartenders are constantly searching for ingredients with authenticity, character, and a story that matters. Batavia Arrack offers something different from standard rum, while still belonging to that broader cane-spirit family, and that makes it incredibly exciting for modern mixology and creative exploration. Swedish Punsch has a very special place because it combines history, complexity, and versatility, while also becoming easier to understand when presented as a historic rum liqueur. We have even introduced our own blend of rum as a single product, both to educate and to show the high quality of the base that stands behind all our work. That has been important, because when people understand the building blocks, they begin to understand the concept in a much deeper way. I also see real potential among premium spirits consumers who are looking for authenticity and something beyond the obvious. For the right audience, both Batavia Arrack and Swedish Punsch feel fresh precisely because they are rooted in history but still open to discovery.

5. Looking ahead, what excites you most about the next chapter for KRONAN Spirits — and what can Rum and spirits lovers expect from you in the coming years?

What excites me most is that I feel we are still only beginning to explore the full potential of the concept. We already have strong quality across all our products, and with KRONAN 2024 KRONAN Spirits Limited Edition we introduced new medium-roasted Swedish oak barrels that added even more complexity without losing the identity of Swedish Punsch. That balance matters greatly to me, because development must never come at the expense of the soul of the category. At the same time, creativity and exploration are essential if something historic is to stay alive, meaningful, and relevant. Right now, a new batch of Limited is maturing in our new Swedish oak barrels, and that alone opens exciting thoughts about where we can go next. Together with our Batavia Arrack and our rum expressions, I believe we are showing that this is not a closed chapter from the past, but a living world of flavor and possibility. In many ways, only the imagination is the limitation.
